Celebrating Great News for India’s Tigers, Corbett Records Highest Density of Tigers in World

News update: India is land of more wild tigers than any other country – approx 70 percent of the world’s total. Uttarakhand’s Jim Corbett National Park has reported the highest tiger density among India’s 50 tiger’s reserves with 14 tigers per 100 square kilometres, followed by Kaziranga National Park in Assam, Nagarhole and Orang Tigers reserves.

According to the report released by the Union Environment Department, Corbett Tiger Reserve has the highest tiger numbers with 252 inside the reserve and 266 using the reserve. The data revealed in the annual tiger population estimation exercise conducted by the state forest department.

Corbett National Park followed by Nagarhole Tiger Reserve in Karnatka with 127 tigers, Bandipur Tiger Reserve (Karnatka) with 126  tigers and Bandhavgarh and Kaziranga Tiger Reserves with 104 tigers each.

According to Dhananjai Mohan, Director Wildlife Institute of India, “Corbett National Park has sustained its top position when it comes to tiger population among all the 50 tiger reserves in the country.”

In a 2014 Tiger Census, Uttarakhand had 340 tigers including 215 in Corbett and 16 in Rajaji Tiger Reserve.
